WORK has started to restore one of the finest church organs in the Forest of Dean.

And to help raise the necessary funds, parishioners at the parish church of Christchurch, near Coleford, are holding a week-long festival of flowers, music and lights which will culminate in a carol service led by Berry Hill Silver Band this Sunday (6pm).

The restoration project is costing more than £12,000. Fund-raising has been going on for two years and the church council is confident the current shortfall of £1,500 can be achieved by next Easter.

The organ dates from the early 1800s and was built by Bishop, Starr and Richardson. It is believed it was originally installed in Hereford Cathedral before being moved to St Mary's in Monmouth and eventually to Christchurch in 1884.

Organ builder John Bleney, of Worcester, says it is a unique and historic instrument well worth preserving.

Support has come from The Council for the Care of Churches and The Pilling Trust who between them have contributed £5,000.

The church is open throughout this week and the festival will include selections of carols played by organist Mr Bob Aston and a display of flower arrangements.
