RESIDENTS are reminded to be extra vigilant as the nights continue to draw in after a man was found guilty of two house burglaries in Newent.

Gloucestershire Police say that although they made seven arrests and charges across the county earlier this month, as part of Operation Switch, residents should take extra precautions to protect their home.

Harm reduction advisor, Kim Mowday said: “Arrests show the hard work officers are doing right now to clamp down on burglaries across the county but are also a salient reminder that this is a productive time of year for burglars.

“I would say to residents please make your house look occupied by keeping a light on at night or using light timer devices and set a burglar alarm before going out.

“Lock all of your doors and windows and lock away any tools or ladders which offenders could use to gain entry to your property. Invest in security lights which illuminate the outside of your home and make sure all side gates are locked and secure.”

Mr Matthew Lee Goodchild, 28, of Lightfoot in Newent, was convicted of two house burglaries in Newent overnight on October 9, and possession of Class A drugs, at Cheltenham Magistrates’ Court on Monday, November 8.

He will sentenced to a suspended one-year prison sentence, given an electronic tag, ordered to abide by a curfew meaning he cannot go out between 8pm and 6am and ordered to pay costs totalling over £300 and compensation of £50.
