A FOREIGN Office spokesman confirmed that a man was still being held by Spanish authorities over the fatal stabbing of Forester David Martin in Torremolinos.
"The man is still being held on remand and without charge in Malaga, which is allowed under Spanish law," said Mike Davies at the Foreign Office in London.
It is understood the man comes from London. Consular officials in Spain are in touch with him.
The killing of Mr Martin, who had suffered more than 20 stab wounds, some to the heart, took place in a hostel in the Spanish resort and was apparently motiveless.
Mr Martin, of Upper Bilson Road, Cinderford, had been due to appear before Coleford magistrates on May 5 to face 13 charges relating to firearms contraventions, but had failed to turn up, and a warrant had been issued for his arrest.
It is believed he fled to Spain around this time, where he remained up to his death.
The ex-husband of Diana Martin, a Cinderford Town Councillor and Forest of Dean District Councillor, Mr Martin was a controversial figure involved in helping alcohol and drug abuse victims. They have two children.
At the time of his disappearance he is believed to have been suffering from pancreasitis and depression.
