THE revamped central area of Cinder-ford could soon echo to the calls of street traders – and if its markets become a big enough attraction they may spill over to close surrounding streets.

Town Clerk Linda Thomas confirmed this week that the plans for a regular market in The Triangle were being considered by a council committee.

"We have put it aside for the time being because it is just the wrong time of year with Christmas and the bad weather, but it looks as if we will go ahead with the plans, probably in the spring," she said.

The council was studying ways to attract people back into the centre of town and the market would hopefully prove a big draw that would help to revitalise the existing shopping centre too.

How big the market would become would depend on what the council decided would be appropriate for selling from stalls, which was one of the matters being looked into.

"At the moment we believe we could contain such a market on the paved area but obviously if it grows and becomes popular we would have to contemplate closing local streets," she said.

The town was looking up with its new centre and buildings, she said, and the conclusion of work on the extension of the Co-op County Store and car park area made it even more attractive for shoppers.
