THE old market hall that once stood proudly in the centre of Coleford is still fondly remembered by the older generations in the town who, even today, still talk about it.
The wonderful building is depicted throughout Coleford, painted on murals, in photographs in barber shops and on place mats in the Angel Hotel.
People still reminisce about the dances that were held there and where they met their future partners.
Colefordians say it was the biggest crime in the Forest of Dean when it was demolished by the council in the 1960s.
When other market halls were saved and restored in nearby towns, Coleford’s was knocked down – its heritage lost forever.
Some say it was a scandal and things were ‘covered up’ afterwards.
Can anybody now reveal, after this length of time, what actually happened? What are the facts of the matter?
– Pat and Gladys, Coleford.
