ONCE famed for its industry but a much quieter place now, Redbrook wants to rid itself of an identity crisis.
To make sure everyone knows roughly where it is, the villagers have voted in favour of a return to the days of the famous Wye tours when the village was known as Redbrook-on-Wye.
Local historian Mike Jones says there is no set procedure for adding the extra words to Redbrook.
"All people have to do is to use the title Redbrook-on-Wye as their address. It will soon become widely accepted," he said.
Mr Jones says that for many years Redbrook-on-Wye was the accepted name of the village. It appeared in books and guides and on postcards.
It was also on the nameplate of the railway station and, later, on bus destination signs in the region.
A poll was held in the village magazine "Redbrook Round Up" asking how many people would support a change back to Redbrook-on-Wye. Of the 98 replies, 87 voted in favour.
"Round Up" reports a change of name would not be a parish council matter but a village domestic affair.
It asks for volunteers "to pursue it with the relevant authorities such as the Post Office."
Redbrook has the unique distinction of being in two countries – England and Wales – and two counties – Gloucestershire and Monmouthshire.
