RAILWAY enthusiast Alan Dorrington wants to find a new home for a very special piece of memorabilia – the old signal which used to let trains off the main line and onto the Wye Valley Line via Tintern to Monmouth.

The old wooden signal is in Alan's mum's home at Bulwark and it was collected by his father, Arthur, when the line closed in the rail upheavals of the 60s.

"Mum is moving into a residential home and the family house is in the process of being sold. I don't think the new owners particularly want the signal and it would be nice to think it could stay in the Forest," said Alan.

"I think dad paid around 10s (50p) for it, and it has been in the garden ever since," he said.

"My mother, Gladwys, used to work for the railways in Chepstow. She started in the goods yard, doing the paperwork, and from there moved on to the ticket office. Dad was a Forest lad who worked in mining."

Alan, who now lives in Bath, is a fireman on the West Somerset Railway, a restored steam line.

"If there are no takers for the signal I shall probably donate it to the Somerset line," he said. "However I think it would be more fitting if it stayed here."
