A HIGHLY-respected former vicar of St Arvans will be remembered in a stained glass window.

Three designers have been short-listed to create the memorial to the late Very Rev Jeremy Winston who was a well-known figure in the Chepstow area when he was vicar of St Arvans between 1983 and 1993.

He left to become vicar of Abergavenny and was appointed Dean of Newport shortly before his death in 2011.

The memorial window at St Mary's Church, Abergavenny will feature a Jesse tree.

St Mary's is world-famous for its Jesse, a large 15th century carving which would have been part of a larger carving of a Jesse tree, showing the lineage of Christ.

The trio of designers were chosen from 24 fellows of the British Society of Master Glass Painters.

They are Caroline Benyon, who worked on the Great West Window for Liverpool's Anglican Cathedral, Benjamin Winn who has produced stained glass for churches, schools and homes in East Anglia and Helen Whittaker who has won several awards.

The designers will draw their proposals by July and a winner selected. It is hoped the memorial will be in place by summer next year.
