YORKLEY War Memorial has been restored to its former glory in time for Armistice Day.
Since June the memorial, which was erected in 1921, has undergone a major renovation from the help of local tradesmen and volunteers.
Among the many jobs done is the clean-up, painting and repositioning of the stone work as well as a new gravel surround and the metal work renovated into the concrete footings.
The memorial lists the names of the fallen from Yorkley and the districts during both the First and Second World Wars.
Alec Kear put the project in motion and labour and materials were supplied by a team who gave their services and time at little or no cost.
He said: “This restoration now enhances the surroundings of the new Yorkley Community Centre – the memorial is looking really good.
“Thanks go to West Dean Parish Council for their generous grant towards the project. Special thanks also go to Mike Hinton of Lydney Surfacing for the groundwork, together with Martin Watts (funeral director) and Daniel Roberts of Damsell Monumental Masons for the cleaning and restoration of the memorial stone.
“Other people who contributed include Graham Kear who provided transport, Steve Cooper for help with painting the railings, Peter Neale the blacksmith at Sling who provided some iron work, Mr Brice who sandblasted the railings, Forest Fasteners at Mitcheldean, and Hales of Drybrook.”
