A Millennium project that saw a hundred historic sites and monuments being photographed for a CD-Rom by the Forest of Dean Local History Society is to be updated for 2012, with new photographs to reveal any changes that have happened in the intervening decade.

The original CD-Rom was eventually produced in 2002 as part of the Gloucestershire Rural Community Council's Millennium project, which included photographs of a diverse selection of buildings, with obvious contenders such as mining and transport activities alongside some less obvious examples – including a former garden pigsty in Ruspidge that is believed to be the only one still in existence, others having been converted to sheds and garages.

Ten years on, and the project will see a new CD-Rom, this time featuring 44 more sites which had been photographed in 2000 but which had not been published on the original – and a further seven entirely new sites.

The Local History Society say that the project has proved invaluable in retaining a record of sites which may have been lost forever – indeed some of the buildings included in the original have been demolished or much modified. These include the controversial destruction of the pit-head baths at Princess Royal and Eastern United collieries. Happily, there are also success stories too – such as Sarah Siddon's House in Central Lydbrook, which was considered to be at risk in 2000, but has now been restored and taken off the 'buildings at risk' register.

Sadly, the Ruspidge pigsty which had been kept in a good condition by a keen gardener has not fared so well, as it has now become overgrown and has deteriorated following his demise.

Now that the 'ten year on' record has been completed, the Society hope that this will form part of a continuing series, which would eventually become an important historical archive. They hope to produce further editions in the future.

Copies of the CD-Rom are available price £6.00 (£5.50 for members) (plus £1.50 postage and packing) from The Publications Officer, Forest of Dean Local History Society, Croft Cottage, Old School Lane, Off Henry St., Ross on Wye, HR9 7AL.
