ARMED police surrounded the Wonastow Road Filling Station on Monday afternoon after a man was injured in a shooting incident.

The drama began just before 3pm when a Parcel Force delivery driver pulled in at the Filling Station and told Kevin Pritchard, whose wife owns the garage, that he had been shot.

"I had a look at his injury and saw that he had a hole in his right shoulder which was pouring with blood," said Mr Pritchard.

"I asked him what had happened and he said he'd pulled out of Singleton Court into the Wonastow Road; he heard a loud 'pop' or "small bang' but thought nothing of it; he drove on and about 50 yards down the road his shoulder began to hurt and he saw there was blood pouring out of his arm."

"He held the jacket to the wound to stop the bleeding."

Mr Pritchard's wife, Sheila, who owns the garage, said: "He was very calm. Normally I would have been here on my own but I had a hospital appointment and got back just after he'd pulled in."

Five police vehicles swooped on the scene, with four armed officers and a dog handler surrounding the station.

The area was sealed off for over an hour, with other police vehicles and officers in support.

The injured driver, who is from the Newport area, was taken by ambulance to Nevill Hall Hospital, Abergavenny, where he was treated for minor injuries.

Following house to house enquiries, two local men were arrested.

They were subsequently released on police bail, pending further enquiries.

An air gun has since been recovered from the area.

Gwent Police are appealing for witnesses to the incident to contact them on 01633 838111 or to call Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
