The sculpting is being carried out by Martin Truman of monumental sculptors Damsells of Bream.
Ruardean parish councillors Andrew Gardiner and Edward Camilleri were joined by Tony Wood of The British Sundial Society, to see the progress on the work last week.
"We were all very impressed. It is a major new work of art by a rising young Forest sculptor," said Mr Gardiner.
The sundial will be placed over the south porch of Ruardean's St John's Church.
