AN MP has visited a food bank amid concerns that rising demand could see them having to limit aid.

Newport East MP Jessica Morden paid a visit to Caldicot Food Bank to find out about the issues volunteers are currently facing.

Food bank organisers told the Labour politician that they had seen a 50 per cent rise in food parcel claims this year.

Other concerns included the high proportion of single men seeking help, the housing crisis in the local area and the problem of indebtedness among some residents.

When asked about the effect of Universal Credit, volunteers told the MP that a third of the food bank’s clients result from the roll-out of the full service.

Thanking the team for all they do, the MP said she was delighted to have the opportunity to see what was happening, and to meet helpers.

She said she had learnt a lot about some of the issues, and would be returning to Parliament better informed.

She also said her office was available to provide Caldicot Food Bank with help if a client needed specific help.
