I AM responding to remarks made about me in your Opinion column and would like to make it clear that I am happy to speak up for the welfare of animals wherever they are, which is why I am opposed to hunting with dogs.
If consumers wish to boycott Danish and German pig products, they will be able to because this Government has brought in better labelling for packaged meat so that shoppers know where it comes from.
We have also put pressure on supermarkets, through the Meat and Livestock Commission, to ensure that their fresh pork is home produced and Sainsburys I know has agreed to this.
I support the proposal for an EU wide ban on sow stalls and want to see all member states up to British standards. However, banning imports by other countries would breach the rules of the single market and may lead to retaliation by other counties. Would the Review be willing to endanger the UK's £6 billion annual food and drink exports to the EU?
