A MUM and her daughter are setting out to tackle the 176-mile Offa's Dyke Path to raise money to help build a new school hall.
Clare Dow, who is chairman of the governors of St Briavels Primary School, and her daughter Alex, 13, start their long, long march in the middle of the month.
"I am really looking forward to it. I did a lot of walking on long distance paths back in my teens with a pack. Now I'm not going to carry all that and we will be stopping at B and Bs and hostels," said Clare.
"I think with age I now have the mental stamina if the physical stamina isn't too great – and I have done a a bit of training back in March on Dartmoor to make sure we don't get lost.
"Alex is looking forward to it too – it will be her first long-distance walk."
They are walking North-South starting at Prestatyn on the North Wales coast and hope to be back at the Sedbury end in time for a May Day Celebration Fair on May 1 at St Briavels.
They will follow the line of the ancient fortified earthwork built by Offa, king of Mercia, about 1,200 years ago, which is now a fully waymarked walk.
Hopefully they will be able to pick up their sponsorship money, which so far stands at £500, during the fair, blisters permitting.
The couple are still looking for contributions and if you want to help there is a sponsorship form in St Briavels Post Office. Cheques made payable to the Friends of St Briavels School can be taken or sent directly to St Briavels Primary School, or call the school on 01594 530428 for more details.
