A MUM-of-three’s leek and spring onion sculpture of Jacob Rees-Mogg ‘vegging out’ in Parliament attracted ‘shallot’ of laughter at the Newent Onion Fayre – including from the Leader of the House himself.

The Tory minister hit the headlines for ‘lounging’ on the bench during a late-night Brexit debate.

And fellow Conservative MP Mark Harper was quick to tweet a picture of himself with Hester Feld’s ‘Jacob Leeks Mogg’ creation when he visited the annual event on Saturday (September 14).

The Forest MP posted: “Delighted to welcome @Jacob_Rees_Mogg to the Forest of Dean today where he made his incredibly popular debut appearance at the Newent Onion Fayre!”

That brought an online response of ‘Thanks shallot’ from Mr Rees-Mogg, who attracted many Internet memes for his relaxed slouching during the recent debate, and fierce criticism from Green Party politician Caroline Lucas.

Creative Hester bag-ged second prize at her town’s onion fayre for capturing the MP ‘vegging out’ in the House and took home a blue rosette and a Crunchie chocolate bar for her hilarious recreation.

The 44-year-old delighted in literally turning Rees-Mogg into a vegetable in the “Over-17s Vegetable Character” category at the 24th fayre.

She used leeks to make the figure, which even featured a tiny pair of glasses on the MP’s face, and created the bench using the outer layer of spring onions, wrapped around an Oasis flower-arranging block, pinned in place with dress pins.

“There’s so much depressing news around at the moment, I just wanted to give people a giggle,” said Hester, who runs a “nature explorers” group for young children in her town.

“I do it to make people smile. I’ve loved the glory of reading people’s comments about it on social media.

“It’s so lovely to have such a small town talking about it,” she added.

Hester said she only came up with the idea for the vegetable character on Friday night –the day before the fayre – and within a couple of hours had completed the sculpture.

This is not the first time Hester has bagged a top spot at the Onion Fayre – also winning a second-place rosette two years ago, and getting ‘Highly Commended’ the year before that.

Hester said: “I’ve entered the show every year for about five years now. I love doing it. I’m not going to stop.

“We’ve got quite a few rosettes around the house now, because my three children used to get involved in the children’s categories when they were a bit younger.”

Hester came second to a ‘bearded lady’ with a bra made from cloves of garlic, called Fennel von Garlic.

Many lauded Hester’s creation online as the epitome of ‘British humour’. One person joked that it had been ‘Marrowly defeated by Theresa Maize’.

Another said: “Well he is campaigning for us to have funny shaped vegetables again.”

Thousands attended the fayre, which next year celebrates its 25th anniversary.

The event says it aims to “advance the education of the public in the cultivation and improvement” of the likes of blanch leeks, pot leeks, garlic, spring onions and chives.
