A CENTENARIAN was one of the visitors to Bream’s annual chrysanthemum show on Saturday (October 28) and she was even awarded a rosette for attending.
According to Bream Gardening Society’s show secretary Marina Lambert, 100-year-old villager Alice Cook has been coming to the show for ‘donkey’s years’.
“As long as Mrs Cook’s well she’ll come, so, as she celebrated her 100th birthday in August, I gave her a rosette,” she said.
Entries for the chrysanthemum show were down on last year, but the domestic and craft, floral and photography categories all saw good numbers.
Alan O’Dell took bronze and won the HJ Preest, Maurice Tye and Miles Merchant cups, as well as the M Damsell and Ken Price memorial cups.
David Price won a silver medal and the Albert Pearce Memorial Cup and David Hunt won the DK Anniversary Cup and the Les Arnold and the C Hancock challenge cups.
In the novice section, Oliver McKenna won the CR Jones and BHS challenge cups.
The Damsell cup for most points in the domestic and craft section went to Margaret Kidby, secretary of Bream Gardening Society.
Marina said: “Elaine Capper won best in show and the Irene Smith award for an absolutely beautiful drawing of a dog.
“Julie Sparkes won every category in the floral section. She’s fantastic and her work is exquisite. We’ve known her since she was a small girl, when she first started entering the show and she’s come year after year and worked her way up. And she did have competition this year as there were 17 other entries in the show.”
Julie won the BHS Challenge Cup , Lydney Farmers cup, the winner’s plaque for class 18 and the Alwyn Page trophy for best in show.
In the photography section there were three themes. The winner of the ‘harvesting your produce’ category was Lara Waller. ‘A river view’ was won by Sandy Waller and Mary Pendrey won the still life category ‘a vase of flowers.’
“We had lovely cakes donated as well as those made by our tea ladies Lynn Phillips, Di Standing, our president Janet Dowle and Louise McGuinness,” Marina added. “And my daughter Rosanne Davies helped me doing the books on the day.
“We’d like to thank everyone for their support. It was a good show and a good turn out. It was lovely to see new people coming in and to see old faces, including Mrs Cook.
“It’s our 70th anniversary next year and we’re really looking forward to that. We’re considering adding a children’s section for next year too.”
