There are lots of things I've wanted,
but never seem to get.
Like when I was a child,
a 'Great Dane,' as a pet.
For when I asked, quite nicely,
Dad gave a weary smile,
sat me on his knee and said
"You'll have to wait a while."
My brother – he had rabbits,
they started out as two.
I didn't understand it,
but we soon had quite a few.
One 'Great Dane' wouldn't multiply,
of that I felt so sure.
But Dad, had made his mind up,
not listening any more.
It was then, I learnt a lesson,
that has stood me in good stead.
The passion of my wants,
must be governed by my head.
You see there is a difference,
between what we want, and need.
Not all we want, would do us good,
no matter how we plead.
Disappointments are the building blocks,
in the shaping of a life.
'Though we desire comfort,
not battle, stress or strife.
It's in those dire conditions,
when we may feel forlorn,
that through the pain of struggle,
our characters are born.
