A NEW women’s forum for Monmouth Constituency Labour Party (CLP) offers opportunities for women to develop their skills and get involved in campaigning according to organisers, kicking off with an event about Women’s rights in post-Brexit Wales.

Women’s Officer, Penny Simcock, said: “We’re mobilising for action and the purpose of the initiative is to harness the ideas and energy of the women’s groups already established in local branches of the party.

“During the first meeting, members started to draw up a plan for its activities. We identified strategies for helping women members to play an effective part in the Labour Party and discussed ways of organising training and mentoring and of encouraging more women to run for elected office.

“We also considered how we can build links with individual women in the community and with community organisations. Members expressed their enthusiasm about campaigning, for example, against zero hour contracts, for a living wage and for more child care provision.

“Events planned include ‘Women’s rights in post-Brexit Wales’ taking place during the Monmouth Women’s Festival. A panel of prominent women will discuss the potential impact of Brexit on our lives and how we need to prepare ourselves for the future. It will take place at 7pm tonight (Wednesday) at Bridges Community Centre, Monmouth.”
