VINEY St Swithin's had never beaten Frampton Athletic before the weekend fixture, when the top-of-the-hill Gloucestershire County League Club were jubilant with their 1-0 win.

"We have been going for three years. Our first two seasons were heavy going but this year, so far, we seem to be doing well," said club secretary Alex Thomas.

But he said although the club did well to take the lead in the first half when Steve Belfitt scored on 43 minutes, the second half play dropped off when the team should have been improving on the effort.

"But it was three points and a win is a win," said Alex. "We deserved what we got in the first half, but after that the crowd was disappointed."

Steve's effort was however backed by some good play from Liam Marley and John Marfell, said Alex, and player manager Clive Skinner was doing a grand job. The team was now well placed at fourth in the table with a game in hand. The top of the league was certainly not out of reach.

He said the enthusiastic squad had great backing from sponsor John Liddington of Talesouth, who provided the two match balls on the day.

"The next game, a local derby against Ellwood, is tough, though," said Alex.
