IT was billed as the village match of the age, with old boys pitted against the current crack Newnham team, but as to who actually won the day...well, that may be talked about for some time!

The Caerwyn Richards memorial match was played in memory of the Newnham lad who died last year, and it saw a terrific turnout of players past and present as well as a large number of village folk, said organiser Roger Parrish.

"We had enough players for three teams, but we can't actually say who came out best. My impression was that everybody was contriving to make it a draw. However that wasn't the real point – it was a really successful and well supported event which was what we wanted."

Roger said a "three-figure sum" was handed over to Caerwyn's parents, Glyn and Lorraine, who attended the event with Caerwyn's younger brother Celyn.
