TWO homeless people will get permanent accommodation, thanks to a charity sleep out.

The Coleford fundraiser was the idea of Sophie Clark, who was joined for 24 hours on the pavement under the clock tower by mum Teresa and friends Marie Jacobs, Sue Criddle, Sarah Bradley and Sandra Baker.

They raised a huge £3,144 which they presented at the clock tower to Major Viv Prescott of the Salvation Army in Broadwell, watched by representatives of local businesses who supported their night under the stars.

Major Prescott said the money would help two homeless people find permanent accommodation.

She said: “This fantastic sum will make a huge difference. We were hoping to have enough to buy more sleeping bags and tents, as we don’t have any accommodation in the Forest.

“But this is going to transform the lives of two homeless folk, because we can pay a deposit to get them off the streets.

“There are very few street homeless in the Forest, but we have seen an increase this year

“We were blown away that people wanted to do something positive. The couple we are going to get off the streets because of what Sophie, Teresa and the rest of the gang have done have been amazed at the love they’ve received.

“Anyone is only two pay cheques away from being homeless. Some choose to be on the street, but what lies behind that choice is worrying because they cannot cope with the responsibiity of being housed.

“Most people on the street have not chosen that, circumstances have driven them down and kept them down, and sometimes what they need is that one little leg up.”

The event raised money and awareness of homelessness in Gloucestershire, with all funds going to the Salvation Army.

Teresa said: “It was fantastic. Local support was amazing. I’d like to give special thanks to Bolters Bar and Restaurant who provided us with hot food at night and breakfast.

“The Feathers Hotel provided us all with hot drinks and a congratulatory spread and Ritmo Tapas Bar also gave us refreshments throughout the event and there was also backing from the Co-op.

“Everything provided was shared and distributed to homeless people we know of in Coleford.”

Conditions at night brought home just how important their cause was.

“It was very cold. At around 3am, our bedding, which included sleeping bags and cardboard, became very cold and wet thanks to the dew.

“While we could all go back to our own warm beds, there are many who do not have that luxury.”
