THE road and bridge are in no way responsible for the crashes at Broadoak.

From Highnam the height restrictions are well signposted in both imperial and metric. At Highnam the height 14ft 3ins is printed in large figures. The headboard of the crashed trailer is marked 15ft 5ins, so what a surprise that it did not fit.

A driver has a height indicator in the cab of his lorry that should be changed accordingly every time when coupling up a different trailer. Drivers also have an atlas with the bridge heights marked.

For those unable to read a map, HGV sat-navs can be programmed with the height and weight of a vehicle. The sat-nav will then direct you on a suitable route.

The crash was no fault of the road, the bridge, or even the county council. It was down to the driver.

We see a disproportionate number of accidents involving foreign drivers.

If you want to improve road safety the answer is easy, but the solution is a bit harder...leave the EU.
