ANGRY Lydney mothers are threatening to bring the town's traffic to a standstill if something is not done to make their school crossings safer.
Backed by Lydney C of E School crossing lady Sandra Waite they say they will be staging a protest involving crossing and re-crossing the road while traffic backs up.
But they say they want to keep the element of sur-prise and will not say exactly when they will act.
The protest follows a history of traffic near-misses and drivers deliberately ignoring the lollipop patrols, says Mrs Waite.
"Just two weeks ago there were two children I had helped across pinned against the wall when a 16-wheel truck mounted the pavement – they were literally trying to push it off with their little hands," she said.
"Their mother was on the other side of the road and she was going frantic, beside herself, so much so that she fell over and hurt herself. She was pregnant, with 11 days to go, and it was lucky the shock didn't cause more damage – she has since had a baby girl.
"But there are really incidents on an almost daily basis."
She said motorists were approaching the crossing points in High Street and the bottom of Bream Road without slackening speed. Flashing warning lights close to both points would help, she says – at the moment those which have been installed are too far away. Mrs Waite says the protest group has written to Lydney Town Council and Diana Organ and action has been promised.
It was stated the police would also put in appearances at the danger spots but so far, says Mrs Waite, she has not seen any policemen.
"We just want some action before a really serious accident happens," she said.
