LAST year the Forest Sea Cadets unit scooped the Group Nairac Youth Awards and once more the Gloucestershire Branch of The Royal Society of St George is receiving nominations for this year's individual and group honours.

The awards will be presented by HM Lord-Lieutenant for Gloucestershire, Dame Janet Trotter, during the branch's annual St. George's Day Service in Gloucester Cathedral on April 23.

Nominees should be under 18 and living in Gloucestershire. Nominees will have demonstrated through their actions or contributions to their community some of the qualities epitomised by Captain Nairac – courage, selflessness, service and support for others. The winners receive a silver salver to hold for a year, a framed certificate to keep and a cheque for their chosen charity.

Captain Robert Nairac, GC, after whom the awards are named, was born in Standish. In 1977 during his second tour of duty in Northern Ireland, serving with the Second Battalion Grenadier Guards, he was abducted, tortured and murdered by Irish terrorists. He was 28 when he disappeared. In February 1979 HM The Queen approved the posthumous award of the George Cross, the highest honour for gallantry in peacetime to Captain Nairac. His body has never been found.

Names and the reason for their nomination for the 2012 Nairac Youth Awards should be sent to the Branch Secretary, Mrs. Margaret Fuller, at Woodborough, Mopla Road, Tutshill, Chepstow, NP16 7PS or [email protected]">[email protected] by March 5 to ensure inclusion in the judging.
