THE Forest’s famous Sculpture Trail is set for a new addition in tribute to the region’s rich mining heritage.

A 5m high abstract artwork named ‘Threshold’ will involve taking silicon casts from the walls of Clearwell Caves iron mine etched by pick axe marks from medieval miners.

The cave-like structure, which will be sited in ancient woodland 600m away from Beechenhurst Lodge, will replace the Observatory sculpture which was pulled down in 2015 on safety grounds.

Forest planners have given the go ahead for the artwork at the New Beechenhurst Inclosure, which the Forestry Commission hopes will inspire visitors to immerse themselves in the beauty and wonder of the natural environment.

A statement to planners said: “The artist’s vision involves the creation of a structure carefully integrated with the natural landscape, creating a piece of art that seemingly bursts from the ground inviting the public to reframe their relationship with the earth beneath their feet.

The structure is expected to last 20 years, and will be sited 5m from a pond.
