AN OPEN day in Littledean on Saturday will give local people the chance to have their say on the long-term future of Flaxley Valley woodlands.

Friends of Chestnuts Woods have organised the event, from 11am-4pm at the United Reform Church, in response to an invitation from Forest Enterprise for input on a review of the Forest Design Plan.

This is expected to deal with issues like conservation, landscape, archaeology and public amenity for the area.

Displays will show the current work of the Friends, who were formed in 1989 to campaign to save 150-year old oaks in Chestnuts Woods from being felled.

Friends chairman Phil Horsley said: "We are delighted to receive this invitation from Forest Enterprise and welcome this opportunity for input into this important review.

"Chestnuts Wood, Welshbury Wood, Flaxley Wood, Hope Wood and the woodland around St Anthony's Well, stretching up to Collafield and Mitcheldean, make up a landscape equal to any designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

"As a group with support from local people living in the parishes of Littledean, Blaisdon, Westbury-on-Severn and Mitcheldean, we hope people will take this opportunity to come along on Saturday and meet committee members, giving input into our response to the review.

"We are also interested in any wildlife sightings that anyone might like to report to update our information about the area."

The Friends currently have a coppicing group working in Hope Wood, and say they would welcome anyone who wants to come along and join in.
