WYE Valley Art Society is holding its next meeting at Shire Hall in Monmouth on Tuesday, July 11, where Paul Weaver will demonstrate townscape painting in watercolour.

Spokesperson for the group, Jen Bannister said: “Paul is a well-known artist. His primary inspirations are light and atmospheric effects and his favourite subjects are townscapes, markets, landscape, marine and coastal scenes.

“Paul currently specialises in watercolour, but also works in oil, acrylic and line and wash. Paul has won many awards, regularly contributes to The Artist magazine and is an elected member of the Pure Watercolour Society.”

At the June meeting of The Wye Valley Art Society, professional artist Robin Holder demonstrated his method of painting landscapes in watercolour.

“An hour before the meeting started, Robin sketched two identical views of the Old Monnow Bridge on to two pre-stretched watercolour papers,” said Jen. “At the meeting, both drawings were initially wetted and one was then rapidly flooded using different colours, to produce different under-paintings.

“Robin produced two lovely representations of the same subject – one in morning light and the other in evening light – as a consequence of the initial under-paintings.

Robin produces most of his work outdoors and he brought a selection of his watercolour and oil paintings to the meeting for us to examine.”

The meeting starts at 7.15pm and members and non-members are welcome.
