PARKING stresses for parents at a Lydney primary school will be reduced from this week after the district council agreed a parking amnesty.

Staff at the Lydney Church of England Primary School has received a letter stating that parents can use the Lydney Library car park on Bream Road during certain times to ease congestion and ensure the safety of children.

The road, which has a reputation for traffic congestion, has sparked safety concerns among parents who have had to either park or drop their children off at the side of the road during school runs.

Back in the summer a barrier was installed in the car park as a way of stopping motorists "cutting through" to avoid queuing.

The school and council entered into negotiations allowing parents to use the car park free-of-charge between 8:30am and 9:15am and 2:45pm and 3:30pm.

County councillor, Alan Preest said: "This is really good news for the school. I have mixed thoughts about the installation of the barrier in the car park and whether it should stay or not will be discussed further at next month's town council meeting. The main thing is that it is now a lot safer for children and parents trying to get to and from the school."

The headteacher at the school is currently awaiting clarification to queries she had in the letter and did not wish to comment.
