READERS of the Review are being asked to look out for old postcards and photographs relating to the 1914-18 war and how those on the Home Front went about their daily lives during the conflict.

The request comes from a group of members of the Forest of Dean Local History Society who have been working on the production of a book on the Forest as it was during the First World War.

Now, as the final stages of the ambitious project begin to fall into place, illustrations are needed to highlight what was happening both at home and overseas.

The society’s Cecile Hunt and Keith Walker, the driving forces behind the book, want the loan of photographs or postcards which illustrate what was going on locally, with the focus on daily life during the war.

Mr Walker explained: “We have delved into subjects as diverse as recruitment, Red Cross hospitals, how women and children helped on farms and in industry, refugees, army reserve and conscientious objectors.

“At the moment we are not looking for photographs of individuals but rather to illustrate the broader picture such as the huge recruitment parades and the work that went on in shipbuilding and other heavy industries.”
