THE mystery behind a poem about Cinderford has left a local lady scratching her head.

Nan Morse, who used to run the carpet shops, Crisco and Apollo Carpets in Cinderford, recently received the poem from an old customer in what she believed was from a house clearance.

The poem titled 'I remember...' has been written by somebody who remembers the hustle and bustle of the town and the sights of cake shops and a picture house on Bellevue Road.

Nan said: "Unfortunately I don't know anything about this poem. It was given to me by an old customer from what I believe was a house clearance and because I have lived and worked in Cinderford all my life they thought that I must know where, when and who had written it.

"It's a lovely poem that makes references to the dairy cake shop at the bottom of Bellevue where the café at the rear sold milkshakes. It also mentions Miss Preece's emporium along Market Street and questions where all the shops and pubs have gone. It is an interesting read and certainly takes people right back. It's just a shame that we don't know anything more about it. I hope someone comes forward and offers an insight into this poem."

•An extract from the mystery poem

I REMEMBER...

When I was just a little girl

Cinderford was a magical place;

The centre of my universe,

But not a pretty face.

It started at the bottom Co-op

Where the weekly order went,

You could order anything at all

And know it would be sent.

We didn't mind shopping at the Co-op

It was the natural thing to do;

And you had your divi once a year

And value for money too.
