POLICE say they broke up an illegal New Year rave at an industrial estate attended by some 2,000 people.

Officers were called to the Severn Bridge Industrial Estate in Symondscliffe Way, Portskewett, just after midnight on January 1 following reports of a “large gathering”.

A Gwent Police spo- kesman said they managed to disperse the crowd and although no arrests were made at the time, enquires were still ongoing.

Local residents reported seeing a large police presence at the site in the early hours of the morning, although one woman posted: “We live right by it and didn’t hear a thing.”

Some who took to social media in support of the ravers accused police of being ‘killjoys’ and ‘spoiling the fun’.

One resident added: “Of course the police turn up up to break up the menace of a group of youngsters enjoying themselves in the middle of nowhere bothering no one.”

Another poster said the ravers moved on to a venue in Bristol and put up a video of the event, describing it as “quality”.

Anyone with information about the gathering at Severn Bridge Industrial Estate is asked to contact Gwent Police by calling 101, quoting log reference 2000000438.

Alternatively, they can send the force a direct message via Facebook or Twitter, or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
