THE Forest of Dean area alone is facing a £100,000 bill for fixing immediate road surface damage from flooding, plus another £75,000 for longer-term remedial work.

Forest of Dean Divisional Surveyor Robin Peacey told the Review that he had started his estimate some three weeks ago, and during that time alone the damage had risen by a further £25,000.

Potholes, subsidence and drainage damage have all worsened during three months of almost continuous rain.

"Some of it is for damage in places like Maisemore where we have had to route a lot of traffic down a comparatively minor road and the damage is quite severe," he said.

"The longer-term work for improvements includes places where water has run off roads into properties.

"In some places like Church Road in Longhope people have been flooded two or three times in the last six weeks and we are looking at ways to prevent that happening."

With dryer conditions some of the work can be started soon – but more wet weather will lead to delays and probably more damage.
