I?HAVE read the article in the Review dated February 25, 2011 about Forest district councillor Alan Preest preparing a motion to go before the district council to put a surcharge of five percent on local takeaways and fast food outlets to be used to pay the cost of street cleaning.

He will be forced to include public houses and shops into this proposal or put the charge on the council tax which would not be popular.

He should remember it is not the takeaways or the fast food outlets which cause this litter – it is the customers who cause it.

More effort should be put in to catching the culprits. By prosecuting them, it would act as a deterrent with a hefty fine.

You could make the streets cleaner by making the people who are on the dole clean them.
