THE £420,000 refurbishment and upgrade of Lydney Hospital's A and E department has been completed.

Work to extend the department and make the changes started on January 14, with the Friends of Lydney Hospital donating £175,000 towards the work and Mabey Johnson a further £50,000.

The annual fund-raising summer fete organised by the Friends took place a fortnight ago, raising a staggering £9,000 towards their donation.

The new department will be 'open for business' from lunchtime this Friday ahead of the official opening next month by Mr David Mabey.

Chairman of the Friends Melville Watts said: "The hospital is such and important part of our local community and we are continually amazed at the level of support the community gives us.

"Local industry is also very supportive. Everyone at the hospital appreciated the new works and it is a pleasure to receive such positive comments from patients, visitors and staff alike."

Forest Community Hospitals manager Jeanette Giles said: "I am delighted with the way the scheme has progressed. The new department will be wonderful and will compliment the other improvements we have made to the hospital."

Casualty sister and lead nurse Sandra Jones said: "We are delighted to be in our purpose built unit which will improve the environment for patients, relatives and staff."
