DESPITE the threat of rain, 468 runners turned the streets into a festive sea of red on Sunday (December 2), with many dressed as the season’s favourite gift-giver, for an event that raised nearly £2,500 for charity.

Monmouth’s Santa Fun Run organisers – from the Spirit of Monmouth Running Club – say they were “overwhelmed” with the turnout to take on the 2.1km fun run.

Race director, Stuart Kramer, said: “A host of Father and Mother Christmases, reindeer, Christmas presents, elves and snowmen all joined the festive throng and enjoyed a wonderful, and thankfully dry, morning of spirited exercise. The turnout was overwhelming.

“Prizes were awarded to Dan Richards for best-dressed male Santa, Katie Mapp for best-dressed female Santa. Best-dressed boy went to Sam Guerin and Freya and Erin Williams jointly won best-dressed girl Santas.

“The team prize went to Bryn and Sophie Williams and Kirk and Sophie Hill. Alfie the Dachshund won best-dressed pet and Caroline Layne won best-dressed Christmas vehicle for Santa’s sleigh.

“The coveted Christmas Spirit Award went to a team of six called ‘Fit and Elfie’. Our chosen charity was south Wales-based dog welfare charity Hope Rescue, and they will receive £2,487.21 in due course from monies collected from entry fees, various donations and match-funding from Emma King at Barclay’s Bank.

“I would like to pass my sincere thanks to the Spirit of Monmouth Running Club for their continued enthusiasm in running this special event, Monmouthshire County Council and Highways for allowing us to close Monnow Street and to local businesses for donating their time, expertise and financial support for the event.

“These included Monmouth Boys School and Sports Centre, Timpson, Wye Media, The Co-op for their generous donation, and shoppers who donated to our bucket shake. Thanks to Graeme Corfield from The Little Brew Hope Rescue, Monmouth Junior Rugby Club and the residents and businesses of Monmouth for enduring the disruption of the morning.

“We look forward to seeing you all at next year’s event, on Sunday, December 1.”
