I LIVE in?Brockweir, and I want to put my personal point of view about the cycle-track.
I don't trust Sustrans, why should I? So far they have been underhand and fanatical.
When you live in a place of great beauty like the Wye Valley you become very protective of it. You hope people will really appreciate its uniqueness and treat the area with respect.
It's not a private fiefdom as one rather sad letter stated.
It has a fragile, silent beauty, that can so easily be destroyed, when an organisation with too much easy money decide they have the right to change-it, surface it, 'open it up', and give everyone total access.
You can access all areas by walking – try it today.
Now the question of the tunnels. It seems that Tidenham Parish Council are the only ones with a grip on reality. They know the whole of the cycle-path will become the terrain of mini-motorbikes, raves, stench and trouble.
There is already under-age drinking going on in the access to the tunnels.
Sustrans want to build another bridge across the river. Why? Let's not kid ourselves it is for families or wheelchair users. It's for the fitness fanatics to make a cycle race-track getting from A to B as fast as they can.
The only evidence they have been here will be rubbish, plastic bottles, cans and oh yes, my favourite, bags of used nappies – what is that all about?
I love this village – we get along with no speed limit through the village. Bur hordes of manic cyclists doing a Tour de France down the tiny lanes and Brockweir Hill is a disaster waiting to happen. There will be fatalities – you can bet on that.
We are friendly people, but of course we get territorial! If we don't fight for the valley who will?
Sustrans don't really care about the chaos they will create, or the natural beauty and wildlife they will destroy. Building this cycle-track through our beautiful valley would be like using the Mona Lisa as a dartboard. – Mrs Moiya Clarke, Brockweir.
