COUNTY highways chiefs say they are ready for winter with a full stock of road salt and more on order.

Monmouthshire Council's Cabinet member for Operations, Councillor Bryan Jones, said: "Our gritting routes cover around a third of the county's 1,000-mile (1,600km) road.

"Last year we went out so many times that we gritted nearly 16,000 miles (25,750km) of road.

The full stock of road salt is around 10,000-tonnes.
