REPAIRS and reconstruction of the iconic bridge at Redbrook could well exceed a million pounds, according to estimates linked to a recent survey.

The bridge, which links Redbrook on the English side with Penallt on the Welsh side of the River Wye, is currently the subject of a community consultation project, 'Bridging The Borders - Redbrook Bridge/Penallt Viaduct' which is being organised by the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) office in Monmouth.

The bridge, also known locally as Penallt Viaduct, was completed in 1876, and carried passenger trains until 1959, and freight until 1964. Today a hanging walkway, beside the now dilapidated central section of the bridge, allows pedestrian and cycle access to the Boat pub, and the village beyond, and forms part of the Wye Valley Walk.

In a statement issued by the AONB office, the public consultation is explained as being aimed at directing future options of renovation and conservation work, allowing for their being in receipt of the Lottery grant.

It reads: "Following on from a survey carried out on the bridge last year by Opus International (UK), The Wye Valley AONB Unit will be applying for lottery funding to undertake work which will enable the bridge to fulfil its potential. The study reports on ways that the bridge can be enhanced and provide a safe crossing for multiple users which would include a new deck and further conservation measures."

However the costs involved in the project are likely to pass a million pounds - depending on whether the experts decide that the structure needs repainting, which could add £250,000 to the final bill.

But repainting the bridge is itself a contentious issue - with some experts claiming that the ironwork would be better left open to the elements, since it is claimed that paint can hold moisture in to the metal.

The consultation process, which is being handled by Kate Biggs, Wye Valley AONB Heritage Officer, will end when the Heritage Lottery bid is sent off in mid October.
