WYEDEAN School in Sedbury is applying to children’s charity UNICEF for a recognition of commitment to become a Rights Respecting School (RRS).
Headteacher Rob Ford said: “It’s about being globally aware and tolerant. In practice it means, for instance, that our sixth form students regularly Skype a school in Washington and discuss topical issues such as what Donald Trump’s presidency would mean for the United States.
“Our Year 10 students visited a London mosque and met pupils at Forest Gate School in the East End to explore together current issues such as the events in Nice and the rise of extremism.
“I’m already a British Council ambassador and, in a climate where hate crime against Eastern Europeans is reportedly rising, we believe it’s even more important that our students are learning about their rights and responsibilities and the importance of respecting the rights of others.”
