DRIVERS should expect delays on a main town centre road over the next 10 days as resurfacing work gets underway.
A convoy system is set to control traffic on Highfield Road in Lydney between 7.30am and 10.30pm daily until Friday, August 11.
The news that the work was finally getting under way yesterday (Tuesday, August 1) was welcomed by Gloucestershire county councillor Alan Preest (Con, Lydney).
“This is the main road through the town centre and needs to be in top condition,” he said.
“We appreciate this work may cause disruption to locals, but it will be worth it in the long run.”
He added that it was excellent news to see his “number one county council election pledge coming to fruition” as the potholed road was “in dire need of repair.”
Drivers will have to wait at temporary traffic lights for the convoy car in order to travel along the road while the work takes place.
Highfield Road will be closed one lane at a time to make sure visitors can access the town centre and shops. There will also be gatemen at each end to ensure residents can have access while the road is being resurfaced.
Cllr Vernon Smith, cabinet member for highways, said: “Convoy cars are a useful way of keeping our crews safe and allowing the road to stay partially open.
“Thank you to everyone for their patience during the works, which are an important part of the investments we are making in Forest roads.”
The county council said it was necessary to use convoy working with traffic because of the road width and machinery that will be used.
The convoy car will drive in front of vehicles to keep the speed down as it passes the road works, which allows the road to stay open and remain safe for engineers to work on site.
