POLICE are still looking for the man who threatened a Chepstow jeweller with a gun – but they have been criticised for not letting other businesses know about the danger.
The man, who appeared to be carrying a gun, went into Badman's jewellers in St Mary's Arcade at around 4.30pm on Tuesday last week (January 31) and demanded cash.
He ran off towards St Mary Street without any money.
Dawn Floyd, who runs St Mary Collectables opposite the entrance to the arcade, said she was "disappointed" that the police had not alerted other businesses that there could be an armed criminal in the area.
She said: "I'm about 50 yards from Badman's and the first I knew that someone had a gun was when I spoke to Mr Badman.
"I'm disappointed at the way the police handled because we have fantastic relations with the town officers who are really helpful.
"I think the police should have warned people in the area that there was potentially someone with a gun in the area.
"Just before it happened I locked the shop because there were two guys outside who were making me feel uncomfortable.
"I've never locked the shop like that before and I don't know if they were connected with the robbery.
"It might have been a coincidence, I don't know."
A spokeswoman for Gwent Police said: "Our enquiries are ongoing and if anyone has any concerns then we would ask them to contact us directly so we can discuss these with them."
The man police wish to question in relation to the attempted robbery is described as white, about five feet eight inches tall and of medium build.
He had brown curly hair and was wearing blue jeans, a hooped top with blue and white stripes and was carrying a blue canvas bag.
If anyone has any information about the incident they are asked to call Gwent Police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
