A FIRST class day enjoyed by thousands of people.
That was the verdict of Lydney's rugby manager Gordon Sargent as he reflected on his team's Tetley's Bitter Cup fifth round defeat by 40 points to nil at the hands of the multi-million pounds London club Saracens.
Lydney were never expected to win but, true to form and predictions, they played out of their skins and tackled themselves into the ground.
Sargent was perplexed on Monday morning to read some newspaper accounts of an alleged incident involving a spectator and Irish international Paddy Johns.
"There was no mention of it after the game. In fact we had a really good time and Saracens were certainly not concerned about anything. We will take a look at the video to see what went on but at this stage it seems as though the Press are making something out of nothing," he said.
Lydney hooker Nick Nelmes said the team had done themselves proud and enjoyed the occasion.
"There was more pressure on them than on us as we were not expected to win. But they were excellent company afterwards. Some players swapped ties and everyone mixed in well. At least they know where Lydney is now," he said.
