A TEMPORARY halt has been called to major music-making events at Coleford's Baptist Church. Well known for the quality of its acoustics, the building will not now be used for gatherings of more than 120 people until fire safety work has been completed.

The church has a reputation as one of the top local venues for concerts.

But following an inspection by fire officers, events have now been restricted until an external fire escape has been provided.

A spokesman told the Review the building could continue to be used for rehearsals and practice sessions, but until the completion of the work the upstairs hall was temporarily out of bounds for gatherings of more than 120.

She said: "It's a bit of a blow. The church is very much a community asset and because of the quality of its acoustics and its capacity to hold over 200 people in the centre of Coleford it has become very popular as a venue for concerts."

Work has already been carried out on the entrance hall where there are new fire doors, and half of the total of over £13,000 has been raised for the remainings jobs.

The target is to raise £6,750 and for the work to be completed next year. It is hoped some of this money can be achieved by obtaining grants.

A sponsorship scheme is also being launched and local companies are being invited to take part in providing "A Step on the Staircase".

"We want to be able to provide a large venue for the town again soon," said the spokesman.

The church has had to rearrange its own Christmas Eve carol service. The popular event, featuring Forest Brass, will now be held at Lakers School at 6pm.
