REDBROOK Primary School is benefiting from strong and determined leadership, with pupils achieving well and continuing to make good progress, say Ofsted inspectors.

Three of the four areas inspected were all judged as good – behaviour and safety, leadership and management and achievement and progress – with significant improvements made in all these areas.

By the time children leave the school in Year Six pupils' attainment is above average in reading, writing and maths and in 2012, attainment in maths and writing is the highest it has been in five years.

However, under Ofsted's new tougher inspection regime, all four areas need to be judged as good to achieve that rating. The quality of teaching was judged as a grade three 'requiring improvement' so that is the overall rating given. In the previous inspection framework, a three was 'satisfactory'.

Redbrook School has gone through a period of considerable change during the last few years and the report found that while the quality of teaching required improvement, the inspector recognised that teachers understand when their teaching has been most successful and are committed to improving their practice to enable pupils to further improve their learning.

Leadership and management has been praised for being instrumental in establishing a clear focus for school improvement and Ofsted felt that the executive head-teacher Mandy Lloyd has successfully shared her vision and high expectations.

She said: "We are delighted that three of the four areas were graded as good because this reflects the hard work and dedication of the staff to bring about change in a relatively short space of time. Our pupils continue to achieve well, their behaviour is good and they feel safe and cared for at school.

"We already had plans in motion to bring about improvement in the areas identified by Ofsted and rigorous strategies are in place to address them."

Chair of governors Sue Young said: "We are very proud of Redbrook School. We are proud that this is a school where children's learning achievements are above the national average.

"We are proud that Redbrook, because it is a small community school, offers an education that is becoming increasingly rare; an education where children are taught and cared for with high levels of one-to-one attention so that they quickly become confident, independent, socially caring and responsible, so that they flourish as individuals."
