THE LYDNEY Seniors club is looking forward to a successful year after celebrating its 60th birthday recently.

In its heyday the club had more than 200 members but that has fallen to just a dozen at present.

A celebration birthday cake was cut to mark the anniversary at a club meeting at Watermead.

Membership is open to anyone over 50 although at the moment, two members are 90, five are in their 80s and the rest are in their 70s.

Mrs Ivy Coldwell, a member of the club, said: "We're a friendly bunch and there is a very warm welcome for new members.

"When the club first opened, all the local businessmen and dignitaries were members.

"Lord Bledisloe was the first member and president. We're down to a dozen members at the moment but we are still going strong."

The club is a social get together with cards, raffles and bingo.

It meets at Watermead on Thursday afternoons between 2pm and 4pm.
