I HAVE been following with great interest over recent months the lively correspondence concerning many local issues – the badger cull, deer hunting, cyclists, walkers and I wonder if, with a concerted effort, we might not be able to combine together to forge a satisfactory solution.

We could have a 'cyclist cull.' Just think, it would solve all sorts of problems.

The added thrill of dodging grapeshot would improve the cyclists' trial times. Hides could be set up at crossroads as cyclists seem unable to pass one without stopping. They would then present an easier target for those of us unused to guns.

Walkers would be able to vent their frustrations at being driven off paths by speed freaks.

The Forestry Commission would be able to increase its revenue by charging a small fee (this would only need to be nominal, walkers would turn up in droves), they might even be able to persuade German marksmen to come over in the slack season and we could have competitions.

Should this not meet with general approval, perhaps cyclists could try to understand that pedal and pedestrian don't mix easily. It is the equivalent of them taking a gentle cycle down the fast lane of the M1.

If they could just slow down and give walkers an opportunity to get children and dogs under control. Given the chance we are more than happy to do this. We don't want accident or injury any more than they do.

And why can't they, when cycling towards walkers from behind, give warning of their approach? They really cannot be heard until it is too late. It can't be that difficult surely?

Life would be so much easier for everyone if there were less of a 'dog in the manger' attitude on both sides of the divide. There would then be no need for abuse or invective and we could all get on with enjoying what is a beautiful part of the country. – F.M. Baddley, Oakwood Road, Bream.
