AROUND £1,200 was raised at the annual Lydney Poppy Appeal concert, bringing the total raised since October to at least £18,000.

Some 150 people supported the event at Lydney Town Hall on Valentine’s Day.

Chairman of the branch, Mel Rudge said: “The amount of people who attended was down on last year – we had around 150 and were hoping for at least 250. Despite a low turnout we managed to raise £1,200.

“We aim to hit £20,000 by the end of September which we hope to achieve through hosting various fundraisers between now and then.

“What a night it was. There was plenty of entertainment. My favourite performance was by 614 Lydney Squadron ATC who performed a version of Highland Cathedral and Cinderford Town Band joined in the second chorus bringing tears to the audiences’ eyes.”

Poppy Appeal organiser, Stan Rudge added: “Lydney ATC gave a sterling performance – they are a credit to themselves, their squadron and Lydney. Cinderford Town Band gave once again a first-class performance. The two young ladies Tyler Evans and Betty Hughes sang Angels and are a credit to their families.

“The event raised a magnificent sum for the Poppy Appeal, which will go towards helping the welfare work for the Royal British Legion.

“On behalf of the legion, I must also thank the Flower Pot for the flower display they did, the businesses that supported the concert as well as the town hall staff who ran the bar.”
