TOP golfer Alison Nicholas has teed-off a unique amateur competition for women, a regional round of which will be played at Chepstow's Marriott St Pierre course.

The ladies golf classic has been launched to encourage as many women as possible to play in their own national competition. It is open to any amateur golfer with a recognised handicap and is believed to be the first competition of its kind in the country.

Local clubs are being encouraged to enter teams and the winners of the regional final which will be played at St Pierre on Monday, July 19, will qualify for the final to be played at the Forest of Arden course, Birmingham, in September.

Professional players, including Alison Nicholas, will join each of the competing teams as a player.

She said: "I want to develop this tournament over the coming years until we have a large number of regional heats, including junior competitions, making it the most prestigious amateur ladies team competition in the golfing calendar."
