THERE is a spread from the Forest of Dean Council in the latest Review thanking residents for 256 tonnes of food waste collected in July and diverted from landfill, also thousands in landfill tax saved.

On an annual basis and even allowing for stabilisation as the year progresses, food waste collections are unlikely to be much over 3,000 tonnes a year, and landfill tax avoided of, say just over £210,000.

Could the council publish figures for the increased cost of separate collection, and composting the food waste containing animal by- products, compared with the previous simple weekly collection which would show whether the increased cost of collection and multiple bins is justified in relation to savings of landfill tax.

Flashing simplistic figures of food waste collected and landfill tax rates per tonne without giving the whole story is disingenuous and an attempt to deceive an unsuspecting public.

Thanks but 'no thanks' for such propaganda.
